Learning to Split Firewood

IMG_2190Back in the summer of 2015, we had several trees taken down in our back yard to make way for some landscape improvements (see the embedded video below for the felling of the biggest tree). We kept all the logs and I stacked them out of the way in a corner of the yard that was not going to be impacted by the improvements.

Now it is time to start splitting the logs. My boss kindly loaned me his little electric log splitter and that is what I have been using to get started. Unfortunately it is not going to be big enough to split many of the large logs that I have unless I split them by some other manner first. But this little splitter has allowed me to split most of the little (6-12″ diameter) logs.



Lessons learned so far:

  1. Getting the splitter up off the ground and onto something you can work at while standing is much better on your knees!
  2. Pay attention to what you are doing. Some of the logs do a pretty good impression of going off like a shot from a gun!!
  3. Don’t drop pieces of split log on your toes…
